Description
Samaria gorge from Agia Galini & Matala
Drive along the coast to Chania, then up into the White Mountains to the Omalos plateau. Here begins the descent into the 18-km-long, 3 - 150 meters wide and up to 700-meter-deep Samaria Gorge. Samaria National Park is an important nature reserve, with a variety of natural features, including wild flowers, hundred-year-old trees, stone formations, and crystal clear springs.
The hike starts at a height of 1200 m on the Omalos plateau. For the hike, you need about 4 to 6 hours. You walk through the longest gorge in Europe, whose wild beauty and scenic diversity will surely fascinate you. The narrowest part of the gorge is only about 3 meters wide, and the rock walls rise steeply by 350 meters at this point. This is a rough, rocky, uneven track through the gorge and is not suitable for the unfit or for clients with heart problems, high blood pressure, or pregnancy.
On route, there are many stopping points where you can find toilets and drinking water.
Finally, in the afternoon, you arrive in the fishing village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea, where you can relax in the taverns or bathe in the crystal-clear, turquoise sea after the hike. In the late afternoon, you take a one-hour boat trip from Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakion, past the mighty rocks of the south coast of Crete, where our bus awaits you for the journey home.
