Legendary Palace of the Minoan Civilization and Heraklion's Historical Charm from Chania
Knossos, the renowned palace of the Minoan civilization, holds great historical significance. According to legend, it was the seat of King Minos and is associated with captivating tales like the Labyrinth and the Minotaur, as well as the story of Daedalus and Icarus. Continuously inhabited from the Neolithic period to Roman times, the site experienced a period of Mycenaean settlement after its partial destruction in 1450 B.C. Later, during the Hellenistic period, Knossos flourished until it was captured by the Roman Quintus Caecilius Metelus Creticus.
In 1878, Minos Kalokairinos discovered Knossos, and Arthur Evans subsequently conducted extensive excavations from 1900 to 1931. Evans unearthed the palace, a significant portion of the Minoan city, and the cemeteries. He also oversaw the restoration of the palace to its present form, primarily driven by the need to preserve the uncovered monuments.
The old town of Heraklion, much like other Greek cities, exudes a vibrant historical atmosphere. From the ancient Venetian Harbour, August 25th Street leads to the heart of the old town. The central square, surrounded by cafes, stores, and restaurants, features the Lions Fountain, built by the Venetian governor Morozini in 1628. The Venetian Loggia, a neighboring building from the same era, currently houses the Town Hall, while the plateau and Agios Titos Cathedral, a remarkable Byzantine monument, also adorn the central square.
Extending from the central square, the "Central Market" street leads to "Kornarou Square," where the coffee house occupies the Turkish fountain called "Koubes," and adjacent to it stands the "Bembo fountain," constructed by a Venetian nobleman. Turning left onto "Averof Street" leads to "Eleftherias Square," Heraklion's main square, home to the Archaeological Museum. On the right, "Kyrillou Loukareos Street" guides visitors to Agios Minas Cathedral and the Agia Aikaterini Museum. The Archaeological Museum, renowned throughout Europe, is a must-visit attraction. Visitors can also explore the old city by following the Venetian walls that converge at the old port and the dominant fortress known as "Koules," offering a glimpse into the world of Minoan antiquities.
